Benefits of Various Dating Site Formats

Something tells me her choice wont be Religious Dating.

A few weeks ago we launched a poll, asking SkaDate Dating Software owners what kind of free dating site templates they want to see next. The first results are in and we are still attentively listening to all of the suggestions sent our way.

Interestingly, a few users took this opportunity to ask us back about the benefits of each proposed format – Traditional Dating Site, Social Networking Site, Adult Dating Site and Religious Dating Site, all of which can be powered by the SkaDate dating script. Rather than answering individually, I decided to put my thoughts on the matter into a single blog post.

Traditional Dating Sites

Let’s cut to the chase and admit it – online dating sites are growing like mushrooms all over the place for one simple reason – people are more than willing to spend their hard earned cash on Internet romances. The business is still booming and there are no sing of slowing down.

There are literally millions of people out there in need of a partner. Singles like that look for very specific things online. Namely, fast, safe, comfortable and effective ways to meet their potential matches. Someone has to satisfy these demands. A traditional dating site within a unique niche will do just that.  Several monetization options applicable for traditional dating sites (or rather most dating sites) have been described previously on this blog (Turn It Into Cash, Making Money Through Advertising).

Social Networking Sites

It is true that the stigma of online dating is mostly gone these days, but some people still prefer not to get involved in the whole Internet love thingy. They, however, still need all the benefits of online social interaction, such as keeping in touch with other like-minded people. The range is enormous here –  from Law and Order SVU fans to Paula Abdul haters to anti-death penalty activists.

And yes, Facebook is still around. But you wouldn’t believe how many people really want to replace (or at least supplement) the cold and noisy social networking king with a comfortable and more personal community site.

Sure, there are not as many obvious monetization options here (with paying memberships pretty much out of the question), but SkaDate dating software still offers a few ways to make money. For instance, with User Credits subscribers can promote their profiles, buy Virtual Gifts for each other, or get the ability to send unlimited messages to community members, among other things.

Adult Dating Sites

The core difference between traditional and adult dating sites is obviously in more revealing user content and experience. Sex sells, it’s that simple, so those who don’t want any restraints in their online relationship will clearly opt for some adult interaction.

I think I wont surprise anyone by saying that adult dating sites are perfect for heavy monetization. Virtually every feature or service can have a price tag,  and visitors will still gladly pay the price – it’s human nature. After all, adult dating sites are only one word removed from… adult sites. And, according to one study, those generate over three thousand dollars every second (of course, as with everything in the adult entertainment, this number may be a bit exaggerated).

Religious Dating Sites

On the other side of the spectrum we have religious dating sites. Being of the What-It-Says-On-The-Tin variety, they cater specifically to communities usually based around one faith. This is understandable. There are certain limitations and traditions concerning dating and relationships in every religion. If said concepts are taken seriously, than other dating site options may no longer be viable.

It is also a matter of comfort. Rather than scanning through thousands of profiles on generic sites, looking for an appropriate combination, it’s always better to know that the entire community supports your beliefs, understands your aspirations, and is friendly towards the requirements of your faith.

And while dating giants like Match.com frequently steal the mainstream media spotlight, sites like Muslima, ChristianCafe or JDate represent the category of the fastest growing dating businesses around.

Take your pick!

Turn It Into Cash

Scarlett appears only in the fist sentence. But that's enough to run her photo.

So, I hear that Scarlett Johansson nude photos have been leaked on the web. Eh, I guess it’s one way to monetize your… uh… assets. SkaDate Dating Software also allows  you to do just that, although in a less revealing way, so to speak. Membership options, anyone?

Membership is everything in the world of online dating. It shows the true popularity of a service and substantially increases the chances of installing gold-plated toilets in the owner’s house. But only if handled right. Allow me to explain.

When starting online dating business, most people do understand the concept of converting visitor numbers into cash, but some have only a vague comprehension of many possible ways to do so. That’s natural, especially when a beginning site owner is not used to juggling abstract ideas like membership types.

Well, believe it or not, but different members not only want different things while looking for love online, but they are actually willing to pay for different things (say features or services). So your work is only half done when you got people liking your site enough to register. Now it’s time to group them for improved cash flow.

It may surprise you how deep and flexible SkaDate dating script is in this regard. The predefined obvious options, like Free, Gold and Trial Memberships are only the icing on the cake. Site admins have the power to create as many membership types as they please. But why would you want  several of them anyway?

Think car dealership. The more choices you give to the customer, the better. Gold Membership is the top of the line, all options included, GMC Sierra. But not everyone needs a luxurious full-size pickup truck. Remove a few things and you get a much cheaper, but still best selling Chevrolet Silverado. We can even label it appropriately – Silver Membership. And if your client doesn’t need a heavy duty truck at all, well, there is always a Camry in the next show-room.

Membership types can be set to depend on the sex of the client, or given to couples and even groups. The price, longevity of the service, and billing terms (one-time or recurring) can all be easily changed through a single user-friendly panel. Additionally, it’s simply fun to play around with features and services, making them available to different membership types.

For instance, we can allow Camry members to do pretty much everything, but without direct communication with other users. A sort of ‘see-but-not-touch’ set up. At the same time, those who choose Silverado have the bonus of initiating chats, sending gifts, etc., alas only to a limited extent. Whereas the Sierra club has the most power with unlimited chat sessions, readable messages, gifts, and other interactive options.

What’s really great is that administrators can stick anything in between, and price it accordingly. Impressively,  there are over SIXTY different features and services in total, which can be turned on and off for various membership types. Check our Admin Demo for the full list. As you can see, the possibilities for creating feasible monetization plans are almost limitless, and none of them involves getting nekkid in front of the bathroom mirror. Although, let me check with the development team; that does sound like a potentially awesome option…

Avoiding Common Web Design Mistakes

Avoid Common Web Design Mistakes

I think it is watching me.

The great thing about SkaDate Dating Software is that it comes prepackaged like a Mac, so you can buy it, install it, and start working. You don’t have to be an IKEA-trained scientist to assemble all the parts and design elements yourself. But you can.

That’s right; although many of our clients choose to pick a ready free dating site template from the myriad of available options, some opt to let their creative side go all out. This can be done by hiring a programmer to play with our CSS, looking for a specialist on the SkaDateCS, or ordering a custom design from us.

And that’s where danger lurks. You might think that the concept you envisioned is brilliant, perfect, and unique, but I bet that’s exactly what was on the minds of people who came up with the logo and mascots for the London Olympics. That and cash, of course. Anyway, without wasting any more of the precious pre-week-end time, let’s look into five steps to overcome common web design mistakes often made by beginning site owners.

Clarity

Remember that scene in Hangover, when main characters wake up in the morning and can’t figure out where the hell they are and what’s going on? That’s what site visitors feel when they enter a portal, which fails to immediately and clearly explain what it is about. The difference is that the guys couldn’t leave Vegas, while site visitors can. And will.

It is generally advised to tell your guests right away that dating on your site is reserved strictly for ex-biker scissor salesmen from Guadalupe. Or your local community. Also consider putting forward some information about the services and features available on the site. In this age of fleeting attention spans, an upfontness like that could work to your advantage. And of course the Clarity of your website should go hand in hand with…

Navigation

SkaDate Dating Script is written in the way to avoid potential navigation troubles, so think twice before making changes in this area. But if it’s something absolutely unavoidable, be sure to put some extra effort into making navigation as user-friendly as possible. There is nothing more frustrating for a dating site visitor than the confusion of where to click next.

You’d think that no one in their right mind can consciously make user interface and navigation difficult. Surprisingly though it happens all the time. Most often this comes from the desire to create a unique and aesthetically appealing site. It is good and all, unless this desire overshadows common sense.  Users come to you for a specific purpose. So it’s generally not nice to drive them insane by making navigation a hide-and-seek game. Which also leads us to…

Readability

So, you’ve clearly stated the site’s purpose and implemented a user-friendly navigation. All this effort can be for nothing if the network’s content is unreadable. Luckily, by the second decade of the XXI century the web started to move away from the ‘blinking text’ trends.

Avoiding Common Web Design Mistakes

Oh, I see...

However, due to the sheer amount of readily available ridiculous fonts sprinkled across the Internet, many site owners loose their minds when it comes to presenting written content.

I’ll go out on a limb and speculate that if there is some text on the website, it is actually meant to be read by visitors. Making it pretty but illegible will lead to the same frustration induced by those ridiculous captchas. Oh, and while we are on the topic of visibility, let’s consider…

Visualization

More specifically, I’m referring to colors and contrast. We’ve already talked about the meaning of colors in one of the previous posts, but there’s obviously more to it. Ask any web design veteran, and they will tell you that appropriate color combination is what immediately separates professional looking sites from the amateur ones. Pro Tip: pick a couple of colors as the main theme and stick with them. Just make sure they are not poisonous green and neon pink.

And don’t forget about contrast. It can be used to great effect if you need to draw attention to specific areas of the website. Not to mention the added bonus of letting visitors actually see what’s going on. By the way, this is where we have to go back to readability. Check out Contrast Rebellion; they make the point much better than I ever could.

Now, all of the aforementioned points boil down to one simple but key understanding…

Customer-oriented Design

What’s important to realize is that your site is selling a product (or rather a service), so while it might be tempting to tell the world about your inner Picasso, the urge is better left for a personal blog.

Just accept it – you don’t make a website for yourself. Well, you do – you’ll make money with it, sure. But here’s a kicker – it’s what your visitors like that counts. If they wont like the design, they’ll leave, it’s that simple.

I know that deep down inside all of us are secretly fans of Jackson Pollock. But it’s not the reason to turn a dating site into one of his paintings. A better approach is to make the dating site pay for putting that Ocean Greyness on our wall. Working hard on an appealing design is a first step towards achieving this goal. Or you can just take a much easier way and use our professional and free template.

Choose The Next Free Dating Site Template

One of the key reasons for the popularity of SkaDate Dating Software is the availability of various free dating site templates, in addition to the option of ordering unique custom-made themes. For years we’ve been giving clients what we thought was the best representation of current design trends.

That, however, is about to change. We want to put you in charge of deciding what’s Hot and what’s Not. As part of our continuous effort in improving client feedback, we decided to introduce basic polls, which will show the real demand for specific graphical elements.

As you might have noticed, we produce a couple of new free templates approximately every six months. The last two (Nite Bluez and Day Bluez) were bundled together in the most recent SkaDate Dating Script revision, and are already considered quite popular. Still, wouldn’t it be great if the next batch of free templates was created with the input from the very people who actively use them?

That’s where our new Polls come into play. For the convenience of our customers we put them in a sidebar right along with the free themes displayed on the Templates Page. In addition to writing a specific suggestion, visitors can choose the preferred color palette and template format (Traditional Dating Site, Social Dating Site, Adult Dating Site, or Religious Dating Site). When the time comes to release the new free template selection, we will know exactly what design direction to take.

Tell us what you think and don’t forget to take the poll.

Nominate Your Site For iDate Awards 2012

Nominate your site for iDate Awards 2012Would you believe how fast time flies? It seems that the last iDate Online Dating Industry Awards took place only yesterday. Remember that? SkaDate Dating Software was among the finalists chosen in the ‘Best Dating Software Provider‘ category; and for that we are forever grateful to our wonderful community of dating site owners.

Well, the event returns to reward the best of the best of this year. Aren’t you exited? I know I am. Apart from the chance to get nominated again, iDate Awards 2012 is an opportunity to mingle with the industry folks, but more importantly, to show how far all of us have come since last year.

That’s not a typo or generalization there. I really mean ‘us‘. The Awards are open to everyone, so even the smallest of dating sites have the chance to shine and get the coveted free publicity. Do you see where I’m going with this?

Encourage your members to nominate your site over at the iDate Awards page. There are plenty of categories to choose from, and while the battle for the Best Dating Site will likely be fought by the industry giants, some of the smaller nominations are arguably up for grabs. Who knows, maybe you do have the Best Design, or can be selected as the top Up and Comer? Besides, there’s no harm in being nominated, is there? I bet your loyal members will also like the chance to support their online hangout.

The nominations will be open until October 28, and the voting will take place between November 7, 2011 and January 4, 2012. The results will be announced during the 3rd annual Online Dating Industry Awards ceremony on January 24, 2012 in Miami.

Oh, and while you are there, don’t forget to nominate SkaDate Dating Script in the Best Dating Software Provider category (if you feel we are worthy that is). That will definitely encourage the team to work even harder on all the free dating templates, additional applications, and the future versions of our favorite dating and community builder!
